Chagford Local History Society

The Society aims to study the history of Chagford and the surrounding district and has a large collection of material available to view on request. Membership costs £8.

There is an interesting series of guest lectures during the winter months on the last Thursday of the month, in Endecott House starting at 7.30pm. These are open to the public – Visitors £2. The several field trips, both local and further afield during the summer, are for members only. The society has documents and collections which can be seen on request and these include:

  • A copy of the two parts of the 1841 Chagford Tithe Map and the ‘Apportionment’, which lists all the field names, land use, ownership and occupancy;
  • Copies of all the Censuses from 1841 to 1901 with the 1911 Census soon;
  • Copies of Directories of the town from c.1850’s to 1930’s;
  • Printed extracts from early Parish Magazines and Parish Council Minutes;

The society has mounted five exhibitions over the last ten years, which chronicle the history of the heart of Chagford, street by street. With text, photographs, and illustrations the use of each building and the trade or profession of the occupants has been recorded in the light of our present knowledge which is by no means complete.
